Six Months

Sun filled skies
Splashed with gold
Skinny spider’s legs
Scuttle in the evening cold
Feathered corn tops
At height of hair
A river flowing cold and fresh
A path smooth from wear

Footsteps wandering
At hills end
Three boys, two girls
And strangers becoming friends
Dappled sunshine
Pushes through the trees
Moments such as this, well
There are few of these

Only but six months from now
When the summer’s days were long
We walked along the riverside
As the wildlife played its song -
Five children young and wistful
With knowledge yet to learn
Enjoying every moment
Until the wintertime does turn

Dusk does fall
Dropping mist
Eyes are bright and
Skin is sun-kissed
Blanket laid
Upon the ground
Crushing corn tops
In around

Five people lay
Gazing high
Counting stars in the
Endless sky, but
Where they lay is now
Bare and dun,
Cold and hard from
Lack of sun

Wheatfield is
Gone once more like
Every year yet
This one more
Also gone is the
Summer’s beauty raw
And the winter cold
Is sore

Only but six months from now
When the summer’s days were long

Anmerkungen zu Six Months

Dieser Song fasst das gesamte hippie-esque Gefühl des Albums auf wunderbare Art und Weise zusammen und steht daher am Beginn des Albums. In der Briony eigenen melancholischen Art beschreibt sie den vergangenen Sommer, der erst 6 Monate her ist und sich doch so weit weg anfühlt. Hier schwingt mit, dass nicht nur der Sommer vorübergegangen ist, sondern auch die unbeschwerte und leichte Kindheit. Ein Gedicht aus der Feder einer Jugendlichen an der Schwelle zum Erwachsenwerden, die ihre Kindheit noch einmal Revue passieren lässt, angereichert von wundervollen Bildern aus der sie umgebenden Natur. Vielleicht schwer nachzuvollziehen für Stadtkinder - für alle jedoch, die schon einmal ein Kornfeld inmitten freier Natur aus der Nähe gesehen haben, einfach nur sinnlich und schön. Hier noch eine kurze Begriffserläuterung von Mat zu einem Bild, das sich vielleicht nicht jedem sofort erschließt:

This refers to the height of the hair on the top of the stalk. This is another way of saying that the crop is fully ripe. Lovely bit of lyric and it’s not anything I’ve heard of before but makes perfect sense

Even if ice and water are thrown at the flame
