Incy Wincy Spider

Bridget and the Rain Spider

This story is about a rain spider. Now, just in case you don’t know what a rain spider is, I am going to tell you. Rain spiders have eight brown legs and grow very very big, they look scary but they are really quite friendly and they sometimes like to visit peoples gardens and sheds and garages. They like to live in hot countries where there is a lot of rain.

There was once a lovely rain spider called Incy. He loved to play in the outdoors run through the plants and climb the trees. He liked to go into people gardens but he knew that humans found him scary so he would try and stay out of the way so he didn’t give them a shock. Once he had made a grown man scream and that made him very sad and he didn’t want it to happen again.

Now one year it had been hot for a very long time, it seemed like it hadn’t rained for weeks. Incy was getting very thirsty so when he saw a water pipe on the side of a house he was very excited. At the bottom of the drain pipe there was a drip drip drip of water and Incy had a drink and felt a lot better. He was sad when the dripping stopped. Because the sun was shining, he was hot and needed some more to drink. So he decided to climb into the pipe to see if he could find where the water was coming from.

He looked all around him to see if anyone was watching. Now that is quite easy for a rain spider because they have eight eyes – four on one side and four on the other – imagine how good that would be!

He squeezed his long legs into the water pipe one after the other, one after the other, up and up and up he went. As he got closer to the top he could hear the voice of a little girl. Incy didn’t know this at the time but the girl’s name was Bridget and she was playing with her dolly. Incy didn’t want to frighten the girl or the dolly so he got his voice ready ... with a quick ’huh hum’ and then he said quietly: “You can’t see me because I am in the waterpipe but would you be very kind enough to turn on the rain please so that I can have a little drink?”

Bridget giggled … “I can’t turn on the rain, I am much too small to do that!” she said, “but I can turn on the tap because I have to wash my hands before dinner.”

On went the tap and the water rushed and hissed and fizzed down the pipe.

Incy loved the water, but most of all he loved the ride down the drain pipe and he shot out of the end of the pipe and into the cool wet grass. “Wow,” he thought to himself, “that was amazing.”

Bridget stood at the sink and listened to the gurgle-swirgle as the water went away down the plug hole – she was sure she had heard a laugh and a giggle!

Now Bridget never saw Incy – and I am sure if she had she would have been a little scared to see those eight legs and eight eyes – but she heard him nearly every day that long hot summer and they got to know each other. Every evening just before dinner time when the sun had been shining all day making everywhere hot and dry, Incy would squeeze his eight long legs into the water pipe, rush to the top and say very gently: “Hello Bridget, would you turn on the rain please, that would make me very happy.”

Bridget would laugh and laugh and say to her dolly: “Come on, it’s time for Incy to have a drink,” and Bridget and Dolly would be very, very quiet and listen for a “whoosh, whoopee” as Incy and the water ran furiously down the pipe. One time Bridget thought she heard Incy shout “here comes the rain.” I think we all know it wasn’t really the rain – but it was so refreshing Incy didn’t mind.

Bridget always wondered about what Incy looked like. So when she got older and went to school she found a book about spiders. In the book she was amazed to find a rain spider – a spider who loved the rain! … And guess what? She didn’t think it looked scary at all!

Song:
Incy Wincy spider went up the water spout
Down came the rain
and washed the spider out
Out came the sun
and dried up all the rain
Now Incy Wincy spider
went up the spout again
